First, you should practice healthy eating yourself. The best way to teach your child is by example. If you practice healthy eating yourself then you can have the confidence you need to guide your child down the path of healthy eating.
Second, eliminate as many processed sugars as possible. Sugar causes your children to go through a emotional roller coaster. As a result, children are more prone to disagreeable behavior and continually have a craving for more sugar. Avoid offering sugar as a reward or bribe and try to eliminate as much processed sugars from your child’s diet as possible.
Third, encourage pure water drinking. Children need liquids as much as adults, if not more so. Don’t provide them with calorie rich drinks such as sodas or juices. Rather try to get your children to drink clear water, which provides more room for good food later.
Fourth, replace processed grains with whole grains. Whole grain breads, brown rice and whole wheat is better for children than processed grains. If your child is used to the processed variety you may need to start mixing and gradually work your way up to a hundred percent whole grain.
Fifth, reduce random snacking as much as possible. If your children eat a lot of snacks, they are going to have a harder time eating the good food you prepare for a meal. Make sure you only provide enough snacks to maintain their energy level while still leaving room for a full and healthy meal.
Sixth, teach them to like vegetables and fruits. While carrots and apples may taste sweet, this is only for children who don’t eat a lot of sweets. When children want a snack, provide them vegetables and provide fresh fruit for dessert.
Seventh, provide healthy food options. Only offer your child nutritious food options. If you only provide them with the a choice between a tuna sandwich or peanut butter and apple butter on whole grain then eventually your chil...
